Serve Others

Regular thoughts on the human condition and corporate social responsibility by the CEO of a "for-benefit"company.

The gift of Grace

In my faith community, we celebrated today the birth of Jesus Christ, who we believe is our Lord and Saviour. I don't think we have a monopoly on salvation by any means, but I do think those who follow the teachings of Christ to the best of our all-too-human abilities will be looked upon favorably on Judgement Day and we will enter the Kingdom of God. I think that's also likely true of those who see paradise, nirvana, or some other form of salvation.

I also beleive that -- even in this broken world -- there are innumerable examples of God's grace at work. My own life is a perfect example. I am an imperfect man: vain, selfish, undisciplined. Yet I have a wonderful family, a supportive community, meaningful work and service, and every material thing any man could ever want. Interestingly, I spend less time now than ever before worrying about and striving for material gain, yet more rewards come to me now than ever. I don't think that's a coincidence.

All the great faith communities have times set aside to give thanks and to appreciate all that we have been given... and to come to understand what is expected of us on our own faith journey. My prayer at this and every Christmas is the same: the first part comes from Don Henley... I pray "to want what I have, and take what I'm given with grace." Then I pray that God will give me the strength and courage to love and serve Him in singeleness of heart all the days of my life.

Amen.

I agree with Kevin's sentiments that the basic tenets of  most faiths are the same and I too believe that whether one prays to Jesus or Allah or Buddah or whomever, so long as they strive to do good hear on earth God will find  a way to see that they are met at Heaven's door.  Then there is the dogmatic side of me that has been indoctrinated over the course of countless Sunday school classes that has this tiny little voice in my head that says " Only those who confess the name of Jesus Christ can enter the Kingdom of Heaven". Although my heart does not feel this, my head keeps repeating what I heard as a child - how do we reconcile the two,  and isn't that the eternal rift - basic tenents of faith - Muslim, Jews and Christians specifically, that keeps us from finding peace here on Earth?

I think you're right in acknowledging the inherent conflict here, Meg, but I see this more simply. I believe Jesus is my Saviour, but I don't beleive that gives me the right to judge that someone else's faith tradition is wrong. I don't believe every word in the Bible is to be blindly followed, and I choose the Episcopal Church rather than the Catholic, Methodist or some other faith community. I think each of chooses a different path but I do think there are great and important commonalities to those paths, regardless of our religion. I think the biggest thing that keeps us from finding peace is that we too often choose to focus on our differences rather than our areas of agreement...

"Of those to whom much is given, much also is expected." Growing up, there was probably not a day that I didn't hear those words from my mom or dad. As an adult in our me-first society, we don't hear often enough about our responsibility to share our many blessings with those who are less fortunate. All of us -- as individuals, as families and as companies -- can do more, much more to ensure that all God's children have safe and adequate access to shelter, nutrition, health care, education, economic opportunity and a sustainable environment. My hope is that this blog will offer a forum for robust and civil discourse on how we might work together to heal the world.
